March 24: For the Bible Tells Me So (#24)

I waited full 24 days, but I couldn't avoid discussing one of my least favorite subjects - religion - any longer. #DocuMarch day 24 is the story of five Christian families, each with a gay or lesbian child. For The Bible Tells Me So

The documentary features their parents talking about their own marriages, church-going, their children's childhood (and subsequent coming out). Based on the trailer below, you can probably imagine how they initially reacted to the news.

The doc splices in interviews with Protestant and Jewish theologians with film clips of fundamentalist preachers, pundits, and news clips of people in the street. They discuss scripture and biblical scholarship, but the thesis of the film is clear: Christianity's ever-present problem with homophobia by "the misreading of scripture, a denial of science, and an embrace of quack psychology."

“The inevitable DVD should be packaged in a plain cardboard sleeve, so that viewers can carry it in their pockets and, if confronted by a homophobe, hand it over and say, “Watch this, then get back to me.”
— Matt Zoller Seitz, New York Times

THOUGHTS

Whoosh. This doc made me furious. The amount of intolerance displayed by a portion of the religious community is not only sad, sickening, and maddening, but the exact opposite of what religion should be about. It wasn't all negative, however, as the doc did cover some of the slow momentum toward social change with people of faith and even some within the church who realized how awful they were being toward the gay & lesbian community.

But instead of digging myself a hole by preaching to you what I believe in, I'll do what most of us wish some people would do and keep it to myself.

TL;DR

The story of five Christian families who have gay or lesbians children and how they (and the church) react to the news.
