Day 16 of #DocuMarch was a really fun one to watch. The Other F Word is the story of "what happens when a generation's ultimate anti-authoritarians -- punk rockers-- become society's ultimate authorities -- dads." -- IMDB.
Tony Adolescent (The Adolescents), Art Alexakis (Everclear), Rob Chaos (Total Chaos), Joe Escalante (radio host), Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, many more), Fat Mike (NOFX), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Lars Frederiksen (Rancid), Matt Freeman (Operation Ivy), Jack Grisham (T.S.O.L.), Brett Gurewitz (Bad Religion), Tony Hawk (professional skateboarder), Greg Hetson (Circle Jerks), Mark Hoppus (Blink 182), Jim Lindberg (Pennywise), Mike McDermott (The Bouncing Souls), Tim McIlrath (Rise Against), Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo), Duane Peters (U.S. Bombs), Joe Sib (record label owner), Ron Reyes (ex-Black Flag vocalist), Rick Thorne (professional BMX rider).
Now that I've spent some time in the music/radio industry in a very musical town, I've had the pleasure of transforming from fan to friend with a few local bands and witnessed firsthand how they went about the the other 23 hours in days when they weren't singing songs they wrote as angsty teenagers to other angsty teenagers in different cities every night. I had always been curious, and this film satisfies exactly that same question of "What now?" when their band life stops & their regular life begins.
I know I already said this, but this was really a fun movie to watch. Having been a fan (and still a fan) of several of these bands throughout my life, I've often wondered what the off-stage life was like for such eccentric people and how they coped with just being a regular dude (or dad) to other people. Granted, most of the guys featured in The Other F Word were in mega bands (focusing mainly on Jim Lindberg, frontman of Pennywise), but it's still a fascinating peek behind the curtain of their personal lives and just how normal they seem when not singing songs like "F*ck Authority" to hundreds of impressionable kids.
My favorite scene is from the above photo when Lars Frederiksen says: “Hey you guys wanna know how to clear out a park? Bring a punker and a camera!”
A look at current and former punk-rockers who are now coping with being a father figure and a punk icon.
